Overview
Carpet pythons are large, non-venomous snakes native to many parts of Australia. The species complex includes several subspecies and localities, each with its own size, temperament, and appearance. Despite their variability, carpet pythons share similar care requirements and are a rewarding species for intermediate keepers or confident beginners ready to step up.
Common Subspecies
- Coastal Carpet Python (Morelia spilota mcdowelli): Largest and most common, can exceed 2.5m
- Jungle Carpet Python (Morelia spilota cheynei): Striking black and yellow bands, often more temperamental
- Darwin Carpet Python (Morelia spilota variegata): Smaller and typically lighter in colour
- Bredl’s Python (Morelia bredli): Technically separate species, very docile, red/brown coloration
- Inland Carpet Python (Morelia spilota metcalfei): Calm and hardy, lives in drier inland regions

Enclosure Setup
Enclosure Size
- Hatchlings: 30–45 cm or smaller enclosure or tub. Some individuals may need much smaller to feel secure. Such as 20x15x15 cm or similar for a small period of time.
- Juveniles: 60–90 cm
- Adults: Minimum 120–180 cm in length, depending on subspecies
- Provide both horizontal space and vertical climbing opportunities
Heating & Lighting
- Basking spot: 32–34°C
- Cool end: 24–26°C
- Night temps: Can drop to 20–22°C
- Use a thermostat-controlled heat source
- Optional UVB (2.0–5.0) can support natural rhythms and calcium absorption
Substrate
Use aspen, cypress mulch or reptile safe straw / hay, for a more natural approach. Fake grass or paper towel for a more simplistic setup. Ensure the substrate stays dry to avoid respiratory issues. Spot-clean frequently and deep clean every 4–6 weeks.
Hides & Decor
Provide at least two hides (warm and cool side). Add branches, elevated perches, and fake plants to support semi-arboreal behaviors. Use clutter to help your snake feel secure.
Humidity
Maintain 40–60% humidity. Jungle and Darwin carpets prefer the higher end; Inland and Bredl’s thrive in drier conditions. Light misting during shedding can help.
Feeding

Feed fully thawed frozen prey. Avoid handling for 48 hours after feeding. Adjust size and frequency based on the individual snake's age, condition, and subspecies.
Because carpet pythons grow so big, the 'Juvenile' stage could include them going from a small food item like a fuzzy rat, all the way up to a large rat. It's important to track the size of your snake and feed the most appropriately sized food item.
Maintenance Checklist
- Change water daily
- Spot clean waste immediately
- Deep clean enclosure monthly
- Monitor sheds and ensure no stuck skin or eye caps
Handling & Behaviour
Carpet pythons are alert and inquisitive. Regular, gentle handling helps tame nervous individuals. Jungle carpets are often flighty when young but mellow with time. Bredl’s pythons are famously docile. Always support their body fully when handling.
Common Issues
- Stress-related striking: Especially in young Jungle carpets but common in all young snakes
- Respiratory infections: Often caused by poor airflow or overly damp conditions
- Obesity: Avoid overfeeding, especially in inactive adults
