Common Superworm Feeding Mistakes

Superworms are hardy and low-maintenance, but a handful of common mistakes cause most of the problems keepers run into — from grain mites to accidentally killing all your worms.

This guide runs through the most common superworm mistakes so you can avoid them. For the full setup basics, see our superworm care guide.

Quick takeaway: Most superworm issues come down to refrigerating them, skipping calcium dusting, feeding too many, or leaving old food to go bad in their tub.

Refrigerating Your Superworms

This is the single most common — and most costly — superworm mistake. Unlike mealworms, superworms cannot handle the cold: temperatures below around 15°C send them dormant, and a standard fridge will kill them outright. Always store superworms at room temperature, ideally 21–27°C.

Skipping Calcium Dusting

Superworms aren't a nutritionally balanced feeder on their own. Dust every feed with a calcium supplement to help offset their natural calcium-to-phosphorus ratio.

Feeding to Juveniles

Adult Superworms are sized for sub-adult and adult reptiles. Feeding them to hatchlings or young juveniles risks both digestion problems and turning your reptile into a picky eater — hold off until your reptile is a sub-adult or adult in an ideal world, even if your supplier has smaller superworm sizes available.

Overfeeding or Feeding Too Often

Superworms are higher in fat than woodies or crickets. Feeding them daily or in large quantities can contribute to excess weight gain over time — keep them to an occasional treat feeder rather than a staple.

Letting Substrate Get Damp

Overly moist bran substrate moulds quickly and can affect the whole tub. Add moisture through the occasional potato or carrot slice rather than water, and remove any produce before it starts to spoil.

Humidity in your tub, combined with heat, will also risk grain mites (not fun). These aren't harmful to your reptile but they are a pain to deal with. Best avoided if you can help it!

Final Thoughts

Almost every superworm problem comes back to temperature, overfeeding, reptile suitability, or keeping conditions. Get those basics right — and never put them in the fridge — and superworms are an easy, long-lasting feeder to keep on hand.
