Common Mealworm Feeding Mistakes
Mealworms are low-maintenance, but a handful of common mistakes account for most of the problems keepers run into — from an unexpected tub of beetles to nutritional gaps that build up over time.
This guide runs through the most common mealworm mistakes so you can avoid them. For the full setup basics, see our mealworm care guide.
Quick takeaway: Most mealworm issues come down to storing at the wrong temperature, skipping calcium dusting, feeding oversized worms, or relying on them as a sole staple.
Storing at Room Temperature
Left at room temperature, mealworms continue developing and will eventually turn into beetles, which aren't as good of a feeder. Refrigerate your stock at around 4–10°C — this pauses their development and keeps them fresh as larvae for weeks to months, so a single order lasts far longer.
Skipping Calcium Dusting
Mealworms carry a phosphorus-heavy calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Feeding them undusted, especially as a regular feeder, works against your reptile's calcium balance over time. Dust every feed, not just occasionally.
Feeding Oversized Mealworms
A mealworm larger than the gap between your reptile's eyes is harder to digest and an impaction risk, particularly for smaller or younger reptiles. Size down if concerned or unsure.
Using Mealworms as a Sole Staple
Relying on mealworms alone compounds their nutritional limitations. Rotate with crickets or woodies so no single feeder's weaknesses dominate your reptile's diet, and feed mealworms less frequently than the better staple insects (cricket and woodies).
Feeding Mealworms to Young Juveniles
The tough exoskeleton that adult reptiles handle easily is much harder for hatchlings and young juveniles, who's digestive system is still developing. Hold off on mealworms until your reptile is more established — see are mealworms good for bearded dragons for age-specific guidance.
Letting Substrate Get Damp
Overly moist bran substrate moulds quickly and can affect the whole tub. Add moisture through the occasional potato or carrot slice rather than water, and remove any produce before it starts to spoil. Mould can cause die off, and high humidity coupled with temperature can cause an outbreak of grain mites.

Final Thoughts
Almost every mealworm problem comes back to storage temperature, dusting, sizing, or over-relying on them alone. Get those basics right and mealworms are one of the easiest feeders to manage well.
